🧭 Why This Experience

Chianti's vineyards start twenty minutes from the Duomo. Castle cellars, cypress roads, and tastings where the winemaker's dog attends. Do a half-day with Super Tuscans or a full day to San Gimignano; either way, someone else drives.

🏛️ The Backstory

Chianti's boundaries were drawn in 1716 by Medici decree, arguably the world's first legally defined wine region. The black rooster (Gallo Nero) seal comes from a medieval border race between Florence and Siena that Florence, naturally, won by cheating with a hungry rooster.

💡 Worth Knowing

The 'Super Tuscans' were born as outlaws. 1970s winemakers using French grapes outside DOC rules had to label masterpieces as lowly 'table wine' until the law surrendered and invented new categories for them. Several now outprice the classics they rebelled against.

  • Two estates in a day is plenty. Three is a queue with a view.
  • Small family estates pour better and talk more than the big names on the labels you know.
  • A tour that includes lunch at the estate is worth the extra. It is the whole point of the region.

  • Spitting is normal and nobody minds. You have five or six wines ahead of you.
  • The black rooster on the neck means Chianti Classico, the historic zone. Plain Chianti is a much bigger area.
  • Estates will ship. Work out the duty on your side before you commit to a case.

  • September and early October is harvest. The countryside is at its best and the estates are at their busiest.
  • Many estates close or run skeleton visits in mid August.
  • Winter tastings are cheaper, quieter and held indoors by a fire, which is not the worst outcome.

Frequently Asked Questions

How far is Chianti from Florence?
The Chianti Classico zone begins about twenty minutes south of the city and runs down towards Siena. Most day tours cover thirty to sixty kilometres of it.
What is the black rooster?
The Gallo Nero is the seal of Chianti Classico, the historic zone between Florence and Siena. The story goes that the two cities settled their border with a race by riders sent at cockcrow, and Florence used a starved black cockerel that crowed early.
What are Super Tuscans?
Wines made outside the old rules, usually with French grapes, which had to be labelled as ordinary table wine until the law caught up in the 1990s. Several of them are now the most expensive bottles in Tuscany.
Should I rent a car instead?
Only if someone is not drinking. Italian limits are low, the roads are narrow and winding, and a driver costs less than the alternative.
