🏛️ A Little History

Florence's oldest building. Medieval Florentines believed it was a converted Roman temple of Mars, and its true origins (likely 4th–5th century, rebuilt by 1059) are still debated. The gold mosaic ceiling came in the 1200s, Venetian craftsmen teaching Tuscans the Byzantine art.

Inside stands the tomb of Antipope John XXIII by Donatello and Michelozzo. A deposed pope buried in splendor after dying in Florence under Medici protection, it is the commission that helped launch the family's art patronage. The two porphyry columns flanking the east door were a gift from Pisa in 1117.

Ghiberti's Bronze Doors

The gilded east doors Michelangelo is said to have called fit for the gates of Paradise. The doors on the building today are replicas; the restored originals are in the cathedral museum.
