🏛️ A Little History

The square rose in the 1290s on razed Ghibelline houses, a political statement in empty space. David stood here from 1504 to 1873; Savonarola's Bonfire of the Vanities (1497) and his own burning (1498) happened within these same hundred meters.

💡 Did You Know?

Cellini's Perseus holds a secret self-portrait. Viewed from behind, the hero's helmet and hair form the sculptor's face. The round marble plaque near the fountain marks Savonarola's pyre; flowers still appear every May 23rd.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is that the real David?
No. A full-size replica stands where the original did until 1873. The real one is in the Accademia. The Loggia's sculptures, including Cellini's Perseus, are largely originals.
What's the round plaque in the pavement?
It marks where Savonarola, the friar who briefly ruled Florence and staged the Bonfire of the Vanities, was himself burned in 1498.
Should I go inside Palazzo Vecchio?
Yes, if you like history with your art. The Salone dei Cinquecento is overwhelming, and the tower climb gives a Duomo view most visitors never find.
