Come at dawn when the shutters are still down and the bridge belongs to the river, then again mid-morning when the jewelers' windows blaze. It is the rare world landmark that is also somebody's workplace, and the workshops hanging over the water have the best commute in Italy.

🏛️ A Little History

A bridge has stood here since Roman times; this one dates to 1345. Butchers held the shops until 1593, when Ferdinando I, tired of the smell under his corridor, evicted them for goldsmiths, a decree that still effectively holds.

💡 Did You Know?

In August 1944 the retreating Wehrmacht dynamited every Florence bridge except this one; legend credits a direct order sparing it. The retreat demolished the medieval streets at both ends instead. The bust on the bridge honors Cellini, patron saint of the goldsmiths who remain.

Four Hundred Years of Gold

Butchers held these shops until 1593, when the grand duke replaced them with goldsmiths. They never left.
